Confederate Officer’s letter, written by “F(rederick) L. Childs, Major, 1p, dated September 3, 1861, at Charleston, SC. CSA, Comdg. Arsenal,” 1pp., datelined Confederate States Arsenal, Charleston Oct. 24th, 1862, written to Brig. General Thomas Jordan. In full, “ I have the honor to state that the “Harbor obstructions’ have, during the last summer taken up, and are at present taking up, a great deal of the labor and material (iron) which would otherwise be devoted to this department and I have the honor to request that the Comd’g General will decide whether it is of sufficient importance to be continued at the expense of this department.”
