Confederate Document, 1pp., March 6, 1862, pay voucher issued to Moses Reynolds, "For two months + nine days service as teamster in Capt. Brayerlt artillery at twenty dollars per month", total due $46.00. Attached 1870 census lists Moses Reynolds as 60 years old, male, black. Some black Southerners aided the Confederacy. Most of these were forced to accompany their masters or were forced to toil behind the lines. Black men were not legally allowed to serve as combat soldiers in the Confederate Army--they were cooks, teamsters, and manual laborers.
