PICKENS, Francis W. (1807-1869) was a political Democrat and Governor of South Carolina when that state became the first to seceded. Autograph Letter Signed “F.W. Pickens” on official State of South Carolina letterhead, June 28, 1861, 1pp., VG. Written to Capt. White, Arsenal Keeper, Columbia, in full, “You will let me know how many rifles & what kind you have now at your disposal, & also how many muskets rifle boxed, & how many plain – how many swords & cavalry sabres – how many knapsacks – cartridge boxes suited to muskets – how many tents – how many percussion caps, and also let me know how much rifle and musket powder there is & how many ball cartridges etc.”
