Two piece related set consists of: An Autograph Letter Signed by P.P. Gaillard, 1pp., datelined Sumter C. S.C., June 25th, 1861, written to Governor Pickens. In part, "At the time of the departure of the Palmetto Guard (to which Company I belong) for Virginia, circumstances prevented my going with them, since then I have overcome those and wrote Capt. Cuthbert to inquire if I would be allowed to join ... I should obtain your permission ..." Fine. ... plus, Period copies, 2pp., of the correspondence regarding Gaillard's return to his company, "You are hereby ordered to appear at the encampment of the 2nd Palmetto Regiment ..." This is endorsed by Governor Pickens, "FP", "Col. will give permission.
