Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of The Union, Washington DC, February 20, 1851, 4pp., disbound, VG. From the back page, two complete columns with various reports of the rescue of the fugitive slave Shadrack Winkley (actually Minkins) which resulted in a Presidential Proclamation. In part, “That meanwhile the struggle at the door continued ... and the crowd of negroes finally succeeded in forcing the door wide open, rushed in great numbers, overpowered all the marshals, surrounded the negro (Minkins), forced him down the stairs, out of the courthouse door, and through the streets ...The rescuers ran with Shadrack to Butolph street ... he was conveyed to a cab over Cambridge Bridge. The whole affair did not occupy over five minutes.” Then, A Proclamation, signed in type by President Millard Fillmore is fully printed, in part, “Whereas information has been received that sundry lawless persons, principally persons of color, combined and confederated together for the purpose of opposing by force the execution of the laws of the United States, ... did overcome the said officers, and did by force rescue from their custody a person arrested as a fugitive slave, and then and there a prisoner lawfully holden by the said marshal or deputy marshals of the United States, and other scandalous outrages did commit in violation of law...” Shadrack made his way to Canada and was never recaptured.
