A complete and authentic issue of the New York Semi Weekly Tribune, February 1, 1856, 8pp., never bound, VG. from the front page under the column head, “The Fugitive Slave Case, Arrest of Fugitive Slaves - Slave Mother Murders Her Child Rather Than See It Returned to Slavery.” The tragic report advises the that 17 Kentucky slaves crossed the river into free Ohio only to be persued by the bounty hunters. With the Federal Marshal,they entered the house where the slaves were staying. Then “In the house ... four children, the oldest six years old, the youngest a a babe of nine months. One of these was lying on the floor dying, its head cut almost entirely off. There was also a gash about 4 inches long in the throat of the oldest, and a wound on the head of the other boy. The officers state that when they questioned the boys about their wounds they said the folks threw them down and tried to kill them. The young woman Peggy and her four children belonged to Marshall ...”
