A complete and authentic issue of the Columbia Centinel & Massachusetts Federalist, November 26, 1803, 4pp., disbound, loose at spine, VG. From the front page, a full column editorial “THERAMENES” reviews the Louisiana Purchase in the affirmative opening with “We were afraid of a bad neighbor - we have bought his land - and by his removal, we are now in no danger of a quarrel with anyone.” It continues justifying this purchase. Also on the front page a 3/4 column letter “The People of the United States, To the People of New-Orleans” welcomes the new citizens, in small part, “Spain has transferred the country of Louisiana to France and France to us. Spain has received the Kingdom of Etruia, and France is to receive fifteen millions of dollars. ...” Then fom the interior, a signed in type letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Governor of Mississippi assuring safe passage on the Mississippi river. Then another brief report from Kentucky, “Capt. Clark and Mr. Lewis left this place in the prosecution of their expedition Westward, The have been sent by the President ... about 60 men will compose the party ....” On October 20, 1803, the Senate approved for ratification a treaty with France by which the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory. As a result of this treaty, the nation doubled in size, adding territory that would become the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and parts of Minnesota, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The vote was 24 to 7.
