A rare original issue of the New York Tribune, May 29, 1863, 8pp., newspaper featuring the departure of the 54th Massachusetts (Colored) Volunteers for the front in May 1863. Answering the call of many of the North's most ardent abolitionists, including Frederick Douglass, freed black men and runaways slaves from throughout the north flocked to Boston to proudly enlist in the regiment. When finally full trained and ready to head to war a grand parade through the streets of Boston was used to show case the military prowess of the first black volunteer regiment raised in the North. Worthy of front page status the headlines for this event declares: "The Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts (Colored) Regiment. Review by Gov. Andrew and staff-Great Enthusiasm in the Streets of Boston-Fine Appearance of the Colored Soldiers." and reads, in part: "One of the most enthusiastic, exciting and demonstrative local military events of the war took place to-day, to commensurate the departure of the 54th Massachusetts (colored) Regiment for South Carolina. The ranks of the regiment were entirely full. The men were dressed in regular United States uniform, and were splendidly equipped. They were headed by a full band of colored musicians. The regiment made a magnificent appearance. After being reviewed…by Gov. John A. Andrew…the regiment embarked on the fine new steamer De Molay…the march of this splendid regiment…was attended by the most enthusiastic cheering and such vast crowds…have seldom before been seen. The regiment…presented a most soldier;y and imposing appearance." Other significant headlines, read, in small part: "Movements of the Rebels at Fredericksburg…Our Casualties at Chancellorsville 6,200…Regulations for Organizing Colored Troops…Gen. Buell's Case…The Blockading Service…Contrabands Put To Work…The Siege of Vicksburg…". Much, much more interesting content. VG
