Original Political Cartoon, 13-1/2' x 15", signed by the artist "Bill Dawson". A two panel cartoon shows Senator Joseph McCarthy atop a horse, noose around his neck and about to be hung. The sheriff asks "Have you any last wish?" in the lower panel, McCarthy responds "Yes!. .. Will someone tell me who gave Peress his discharge?" In October 1953, Irving Peress was promoted to major, even though his commanding officer had recommended that Peress be separated from the military because of suspicions stemming from his questionnaire answers. Peress appeared before McCarthy's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on January 30, 1954, and invoked the Fifth Amendment dozens of times in his testimony. McCarthy said that Peress' promotion had been ordered by a "silent master who decreed special treatment for Communists". The Army granted Peress an honorable discharge on March 31, 1954.Bill Dawson was a cartoonist for The Troy Record in Troy, New York.
