Newspaper, complete and authentic issue of the Vanity Fair, October, 1861, 12pp., 8-1/2” x 11,” disbound VG. Vanity Fair is noted for its deep slices of satire. They took on anything that was political, including Abraham Lincoln. This issue has a broadside sheet [part of the publication, printed on one side only], showing CSA President Jefferson Davis dining with John Bull, “Great Expectations.” Clearly John Bull, who chastised America for not abolishing slavery, now covets a relationship with the CSA to assure its cotton source. this again the theme on the cover as Columbia is tied to a stake, “Columbia at the Stake, With the Grand death Dance of the English War Chiefs. [As they would like it]”.
