Bound volume of "Niles Weekly Register" 22 issues, November 21., 1835 through February 27, 1836, with great reports on the Texas Revolution, Indians, Davy Crockett, Slavery, Colonization, and more. With some excellent content including "Col. Crockett has proceeded to Texas - to end his days there. A supper was given to him at Little Rock, Arkansas."; "The emigration to Arkansas is very great - 'with large droves of negroes' - says a Little Rock paper, exclusive of those who are about to join the people of Texas. Col. Crockett has left Little Rock, with his followers, for Texas. Many others had the same destination."; "From Texas...we have obtained Mexican papers of a late date. They confirm the fact of the Texians having captured the garrison at Goliad, but attribute it to a forced march on their part at midnight during the absence of General Cos...The opposition of the Texians has been the subject of much furious and frothy denunciations among the myrmidons and satellites of Santa Anna..."; "The colonists of Texas have revolted against the supreme government, or to speak more correctly, against the nation which has shown them such generous hospitality, and lavished them means by which they might live and even enrich themselves....General Houston left San Felipe about the 22d ult with a considerable reinforcement of troops, to join the commander in chief in Austin...[Includes a circular by S.F. Austin calling the army to take up a line of march]; Reprinting a of a letter by R.R. Royall, October 26, 1835, which reads in small part: "...Our citizens were invited to settle Texas by a government of a federal republican character, having for its model that of the government of the United States of the north. Under that invitation, and that promise of protection to our lives, person and property, thousand emigrated here, and have subdued the vast and extended wilderness to the purposes of agriculture...Under this form of government and this invitation, thousands have brought their property to this country...They have given security to the Mexican frontiers fron Indian depredations...the form of government which we had been born and educated, and the one only to which we would have sworn allegiance, is destroyed by the usurper, Santa Anna...To this new form of government the people of Texas have refused to submit...Citizens of the United States of the north - we are but one people!...We were born under the same government...We invite you to join with us, and we pledge to you, as we are authorized to do, the lands of Texas and the honor and faith of the people, that every volunteer in our cause shall not only justly but generously be rewarded. The cause of Texas is plainly marked out. She will drive every Mexican soldier beyond her limits, or the people of Texas will leave from San Antonio the bones of their bodies. We will secure on a firm and solid basis our constitutional right and privileges, or we will leave Texas a howling wilderness..." Much more. Very good condition.
