A good Federal soldier’s letter written by Lewis A. Stow who enlisted 4/12/62 into Co. K of the Vermont 2nd Infantry and later died of disease. Datelined Camp Near Williamsburg Va., May the 8th, 1862, 3-1/2pp. In part, “The Rebels had left and I had the mumps, so Captain told me to get out there the best that I could, and I fell in with Howaqrd’s Division & the 5th. We came up with the Rebels about 7 in the morning and fight till night. They gave me a gun and I fight about 2 hours ..Then I helped carry off the wounded and I carried off a secesh and gave him some water, and he gave me a $2 bill in Southern money. He said that he got to die and it wasn’t any use to him. He was shot in the side with a shell. ... Tell Thead that pocket handerkerchief that he gave me me I tied round a man’s leg to stop the bleeding & they carried him to the hospital ....”
