Walter A. Goodman who was Captain & Assistant Adjutant General, Forrest's Cavalry, and delivered Nathan Bedford Forrest's demand for the surrender of the Union Garrison at Ft. Pillow. .. Goodman writes his father, datelined Headquarters Chalmer's Division Cavalry, Pickinsville, Ala. March 18, 1865. In part, "The last reports say that a large force crossed the Tennessee near Buzzard Roost and moving toward Russellviile, supposed to be going towards Rome - while another large force of mounted men is crossing rapidly at Eastport and preparing for a move Southward ... I anticipate an active campaign during this Spring and Summer ..." Goodman considers the future of the family slaves, in part, "I think it very probable that the best thing to be done with the negroes will be to send them to the bottoms in the fall. They can at least make a living there ... and will be as likely to stay there as elsewhere. If Luke is likely to be troublesome, he had better be sold. He has too much the advantage of us to indulge in halfway measures with us."
