Three documents regarding the sheriff John Williams Poe to include; Document Signed, May 12, 1885, signed “Jno W. Poe, Sheriff,’ being a Supoena, on Territory of New Mexico legal form, 8” x 6,” attesting that he delivered the written writ. ... plus, Signed Document, December 12, 1884, 8” 12” 2pp., Signed “Jno W. Poe, Sheriff,” certifying he sold the property of the estate as directed by the writ ...” ... plus, “Sheriff and Tax Collector, lincoln County, New Mexico, Dec. 23, 1884 is “Received of John W. Poe Sheriff of Lincoln County New Mexico and custodian of the estate of Thomas Estil deceased, the sum of Fifteen dollars ....” Fine John William Poe (1851-1923) In 1881, Poe went to work for the Canadian River Cattle Association to help stop the rampant rustling activities taking place primarily at the hands of Billy the Kid and his gang of Rustlers. In March, he traveled to White Oaks, New Mexico, where he met with Lincoln County Sheriff, Pat Garrett and accepted an appointment as a deputy sheriff, while still holding his position for the stock association. Poe was with Garrett when the Sheriff killed Billy the Kid.
