Confederate soldier’s letter written by Douglas J(ohn) Cater who enlisted on 5/16/1861 at Henderson, TX as a private into "B" Co. TX 3rd Cavalry. The letter is 2pp., in pencil, datelined Itawamba County, Miss., june 4th, 1862. In part, “The great Corinth battle did not come off as was expected though our regiment was engaged with two Yankee regiments ... we drove them back with the loss of four killed and thirteen wounded. ... Our Major (JJ Barker) was killed in the charge. ... our generals thought it best to fall back from Corinth .. the enemy ids following us ... we have only 50 men able for duty in our company and not more than 300 in the regiment ...” the letter is self covering with “Rusk Texas June 20” cancelation.
