A large group of pre-war letters written mostly by Maggie S. Steele of Topeka, Kansas. There are approximately 30 multipage letters from Maggie to her friend Silas W. Hampton whom she eventually marries. Dated between 1859 through 1867 her letters her earliest letters were written from the Terra Haute, Indiana Female Institute and give a small look into life at the institute. Upon graduation Maggie returned to Topeka, but sadness soon turned to grief when her family suffered through the loss of her brother who drown in the Kansas river. Local community members showed great respect and trust for her father, who was a minister, by appointing him to collect funds for the relief of the locals who were poor or destitute. In skimming through these letters we found some references to events of the Civil War including mention of the battle of Fredericksburg in December 1863, but at that time she seems to be staying in Lexington, Virginia so apparently her and her husband's allegiance laid with the south. Worthy of further that will certainly make an interesting read for anyone who purchases this lot. Overall VG to near fine in untouched folded condition.
