Great amount of reading material covering articles of historical and national interest; tales from the likes of Dickens (“What Christmas Is, As We Grow Older” and “Christmas In the Company of John Doe”), Bulwer, Lever and others; monthly records of events of the day foreign and domestic; critical notices of books of the day (a first review of a new book, “Moby Dick”); monthly summary of European intelligence; literary and general gossip, obituaries, topics of the times, anecdotes, and lastly, 401 illustrations total in both volumes. From adventures with a grizzly in California, to a brush with a bison, to the eclipse of July. There’s an account of escape from Mexican quicksand to French cottage cookery, fashions of the day. There’s an article on Joe Smith and the Mormons, the National Anniversary, last days of the Emperor Alexander, opening of the Erie Railroad, the Southern Rights conventions in South Carolina and Mississippi and cotton planters in Georgia, Mormon disturbances in Utah, Indian hostilities and treaties, Lynch Law in San Francisco, lengthy articles on the life of Benjamin Franklin and Napoleon, an American Arctic Expedition.
