An early war-date field-printed Confederate military pass, 1p. 12mo., for the Southern army gathered in Northern Virginia, "Army of the Potomac, 1st Brigade, Advance Forces, Fairfax, C. H., July 6, 1861," issued by General Milledge L. Bonham's provost marshal, WILLIAM PULASKI BUTLER (1813-1893), reading: "Mr. James Wren has permission to pass, without molestation from the Forcesàto & Fro for one week within the lines." Endorsed on the verso: "Approved & renewed for one week. By order W. P. Butler, Pro. Mar., July 13/61." Most likely, the "Mr. James Wren" is a direct descendent of Fairfax County sheriff and Revolutionary war Col. James Wren (1728-about 1815) who was the architect of the historic Fairfax Court House. Expected wear with folds, else VG.
