The beautiful stationary came folded exposing the triangle Rose. However, when opened to its 10” diameter, it exposed the additional six panals, each with Washington DC buildings including “The President’s House”, an interior of the “U.S. Senate”, the U.S. Treasury, the “Washington Monument”, the “Jackson Monument” asnd others. On the reverse are eight panels, each with two buildings. This is an extraordinary item by itself. But also included the original “Rose of Washington” used cover with color printed elements of George Washington, The Heraldic Eagle and Lady Liberty. The 4pp. letter is written by “Luther” R. Witman who musterd in Co. F., PA 25th on May 2, 1861, serving 90 days, is writing his sister. The letter is undated, Headquarters Lochiel Gray’s, Tuesday Evening, Washnington DC.. In small part, “It is only a few moments since we were dismissed from Regimental parade. There were quite a large number of persons present at our evening drill ... the band is now playing o the green ... Several of us attended the first Presbyterian .. after service I dined at a restaurant ...” At this point Luther ID’s the Rose of Washington pieces, “Enclosed please find a little present for you. Be careful when you open it. It unfolds. It will give you an idea of the appearances of the public buildings in the City. And I think it quite a neat little affair”. Luther continues with family talk. Just an extremely rare combination of the Rose of Washington identified as a gift from the soldier.
