A great early printed Washington College letterhead showing a finely engraved view of the college's campus at Lexington, Virginia, 1p. 4to., letter written by Mathematics Chair Rev. Philo Calhoun, Washington College, Va., Feb. 16, 1846, addressed to renowned and well-published, Harvard mathematics Professor Benjamin Pierce (1809-1880), reading, in part: "As we are about to make some changes in the arrangement of our course of studies. I have…been desirous to see the text books prepared by yourself on the mathematics. Our course has…embraced some of the works prepared by Prof. Farrar & other selected from "Davie's course, but we wish to make an improvement in our arrangements & would be glad of an opportunity of becoming acquainted with the Volumes used by yourself…P. Calhoun." Presbyterian minister Rev. Philo Calhoun, A. M., entered Washington College as professor of Greek language and literature until he was elected mathematics chair in 1837. He was related to John C. Calhoun and was a graduate Union College, Schenectady, N. Y. Near fine.
