War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Annapolis, MD, Oct. 11, 1861, in part: "…we have been knocked about to a Devil of a rate. We was three days on our route to washington. Pitched our tents about a mile east of the Capitol…the we pitched our tents on Munson Hill in sight of the Chain bridge on the very ground the fifth encamped on…there are five regiments here in sight of one another. We leave in a few days with 2500 men on board steamers for Fort Pickens…we shall see some pretty hard knocks…Washington is the d-dst, mean looking place I ever saw…direct my letters to Washington, D. C. care of Capt. Wedgewood, Co. E, 9th Regt Maine". VG
