Unusual ribbon with affixed card "WELCOME W.J. BRYAN, Fresno July 8, 1897" with albumen photograph of William Jennings Bryan attached. 2"x4". About very good condition. William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was an American orator and politician from Nebraska. According to Grover Cleveland, the rise of the Bryan forces in the Democratic Party in 1896 marked the end of laissez-faire politics in American Government. Beginning in 1896, he emerged as a dominant force in the Democratic Party, running three times as the party's nominee for President of the United States in the 1896, 1900, and 1908 elections. He also served in the United States House of Representatives and as the United States Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. Just before his death, he gained national attention for attacking the teaching of evolution in the Scopes Trial. Because of his faith in the wisdom of the common people, he was often called "The Great Commoner".
