Vols., [MWIA Antietam-he died after having his left leg amputated], Camp Curtain, May 18, 1861, to lady friend, in part: "…I hope these few lines will find you in the same state of health and happiness. This is wrong to break the sabbath in this style, but this is the only time that we have peace to sit down…therefore I beg…gods forgiveness for I consider it better then to sit down…and swear like some of our companions do…I am but a stranger here. Heaven is my home…the trouble I had in my mind when I left you and my home…I cannot express for they were great. Nothing but my country's right could have taken me away…I am willing to lay down my life in defense of my flag and my country's cause. We are still in camp here…they are a going to form a regiment next week and send us…to encampment…fore readiness of action. We have very good times here and all is humor in the camp. Five of our number have deserted…[names them]…tell that shoe maker that is in the shop there that his account would not be paid…that he had better charge the account to Uncle Sam for that [sword?] sheath…direct you letter, Camp Curtain, Harrisburg. Care Capt. [William W.] Rickets…Henry Linn…". Linn died at Frederick, MD and is buried in the National Cemetery at Antietam. The Patriotic devise has been cut off from the first page, effecting several words, else VG.
