A complete and authentic issue of The Evening Post, New York, January 2, 1863, horseblanket, 4pp., disbound, VG. From the front page, “An Order of General Lee, Headquarters Army of Northern Virginia, September 9, 1862, Special Orders No. 191 “ continues with eight specific military orders. Highly historic printing of Special Order 191 of Robert E. Lee. Known variously as the "Lost Dispatch" and the "Lost Order", the directive was a general movement order issued by Confederate Army General Lee on September 9, 1862 during the Maryland Campaign of the Civil War. Gen. Lee was splitting his army in two for the assault, with “Stonewall” Jackson taking one wing to Martinsburg. A lost copy of this order was recovered wrapped around three cigars in Frederick County, Maryland, by Corporal Barton W. Mitchell of the 27th Indiana Volunteers, part of the Union XII Corps, lying in the grass at a campground that Hill had just vacated. The subsequent military intelligence gained by the Union played an important role in the Battle of South Mountain and Battle of Antietam.
