War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Rufus P. Munyan, Co. D, 18th Conn. Vols., "Stemmer's Run, Rossville, Baltimore,, Md., Nov. 8, 1862, in part: "…we went out to drill last Thursday and went off to a plantation…and got all the apples we could carry off. Two or three of our boys went there the day before and asked for some…the folks told them that they should not have any but when about fifty made their appearance they told us we could have all we wanted. They was strong Union when they saw fifty bayonets under their noses…that is the kind of Union people we are among. There is a man here that owns the best plantation in town…[he] came from York state. He is a rabid cecesh and has got two sons in the cecesh army now. There i s an old lady here that has got a cider mill…the boys go there and buy cider of him. I think he is a little cecesh but if he is he has got one all thunderin good looking girl…I go there to warm up and get cider. I went once and had to tap a barrel and the little honey went down stairs with me to hold the lite so I just whispered lov in her ear and what she whispered I shan't tell but it suited me first rate. Lieutenant Col. [Monroe] Nichols came here…I told him we did not have nothing to eat and had to sleep under the snow…the depot master is cecesh so that accounts for our being unable to get into the house, but…I think we shall take that in the name of the Great…and Abe lincoln for our winter quarters…direct Rufus P. Munyan, Co. D, 18th regt. C. V…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Overall VG
