BELTON, Francis S., (1790-1861. He was appointed 2d lieutenant in the United States army, 27 March 1812, and became 1st lieutenant in 1813, regimental paymaster, 20 June 1813, and subsequently aide to General Gaines, distinguishing himself in the defense of Fort Erie. He was appointed assistant adjutant-general in 1814, and assistant inspector-general in May 1816; became a captain in July 1817 ; major, 16 September 1838, and Lieutenant-Colonel, 13 October 1845. In the war with Mexico he commanded a regiment and distinguished himself at the capture of the city of Mexico. For gallantry at Contreras and Churubusco he was brevetted colonel. He was commissioned colonel in June 1857, and retired in September 1861. One page Autograph Letter Signed, Baltimore, 1822, to Major C.J. Nourse of the U.S. Army regarding a court martial proceeding. In part, "Dear Major, I have to request you to send me a copy of the permission given to Col. Hindman to move the troops from Ft. McHenry to the U.S. Arsenal. General Fitzhugh the Qutr. wishes to sustain his vouchers for transportation. I have just returned from Washington and left military affairs in a deplorable state. Col. Jones & myself addressed a letter to the Sec. of War at the time of the convention of the Genl. Court Martial, objecting to sit with only...this, he never noticed - but we understand it went to the Senate. The Staff of the Army will unquestionably go...F. S. Belton" Interesting frankings on integral address leaf: "on publick service." 7½" x 9½", light aging, Fine.
