Federal soldier letter written by Lewis Forsyth who mustered into "A" Co. OH 15th Infantry and was discharged for disability on 9/15/1863. The pencil 4pp letter, on Fremont patriotic stationary, is datelined Lexington, October 7, 1861. In large part, I am well and as hearty as a buck ... we hired two buck nigers to cook for our company when we came here ... but we have all seceeded from them today ... they were dirty nigers and we dont want them to cook for us ... this is a great place for the niger ... they come out to camp with a bugy full of white ladies riding round as big as anybody ... the gals in ohio would think it a kind of a rig to ride in a bugy with a buck niger by thare side ..."
