Booklet, “Affairs In Kansas, Message Of The President Of The United States ..., 22pp, 5-1/2" x 8-1/2," Washington, 1856, disbound, very good. President Pierce provides the United States Senate letters of various Kansas officials, from November 1855 through February 1856, regarding the troubles in Kansas. The majority of the communications are authored by Governor Wilson Shannon, indicating great alarm of the situation. In part, "An armed force of one thousand men, with all the implements of war are at Lawrence." Then, "Helpless women and children have been forced by fear and threats to flee their homes ... if the lives and property of unoffending citizens of this Territory cannot be protected by law, there is an end to practical government and it becomes a useless formality." This is followed by several citizens' affidavits swearing to the outrages. Also printed here, is Pierce's Proclamation, February 11, 1856, in part "Now, therefore, I, Franklin Pierce, President of the United States, do issue this my proclamation to command all persons engaged in unlawful combinations against the constituted authority of the Territory of Kansas or of the United States to disperse and retire peaceably to their respective abodes and to warn all such persons that any attempted insurrection in said Territory or aggressive intrusion into the same will be resisted not only by the employment of the local militia, but also by that of any available forces of the United States ...." And so the era of "Bleeding Kansas" begins.
