c. 1760-1780 Colonial to Revolutionary War Period, Hexing Axe Head, Heavy Forged Iron with Maker’s Mark (illegible), Very Fine. Rare and unusual Iron Hexing Axe Head measures 10.5” long with a 4.5” flat square blade. Square handle opening about 1.5” with a spike-like top, 1.25”. Bears a maker’s mark of two lines, but the age leaves it not quite legible. Overall rich natural patina on this iron axe, similar to the example illustrated as Item 9, page 166, of the “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by George C. Neumann and Frank J. Kravic, which are noted as being excavated from English camps. Perfect for any Colonial or Revolutionary War period display.
