c. 1864 Civil War Period, U.S. Model 1863 SPRINGFIELD Musket TYPE II, Choice Fine. This Civil War Period Musket originally had the standard 40" barrel when made. After the Civil War, this musket ended up in the hands of the Native American Indians who altered the musket into a carbine. The .58 caliber barrel measures 25.25" and remains rifled. The lock is dated "1864" and has the "EAGLE" motif and "U.S." over "SPRINGFIELD" in front of the hammer. All steel surfaces have a dark brown rust age patina. The stock has been reduced to just in front of the rear barrel band and brass furniture tacks were added to both sides of the gun (common among Indian owned weapons). The stock is missing a sliver of wood from the left and right side of the fore-end, otherwise, solid with scratches and dings from years of handling. A nice looking gun with wonderful history.
