War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., Annapolis, Maryland, Oct. 11, 1861, reading, in part: "…we have been knocked about to a Devil of a rate. We was three days on…route to Washington…pitched our tents about a mile east of the Capitol…then pitched tents…in sight of Chain bridge…there are five regiments here in sight of one another. We are to leave…with 2500 men on board steamers for Fort Pickens [Georgia] or New Orleans…we shall see some pretty hard knocks…Washington is the d_dist mean looking place I ever saw for one talked so much about…direct letters to Washington, D. C. care of Capt. Wedgewood, Co. E, 9th Regt. Maine." Unsigned, but from his letter archive. VG
