Large image of General Hooker and Staff taken at Lookout Valley in the Winter of 1863-1864, with Rollins & Linn / Lookout Mountain, Tennessee imprint on the verso. The mount measures 7 7/8" x 11", image measures 4 1/2" x 7 1/2", excellent. Pictured with General Hooker are Generals Butterfield, Geary, and LeDuc, and Captains Hart and Kibler. A scarce image that rarely, if ever appears on the market. After the defeat of the U.S. Army at the Battle of Chickamauga, President Lincoln sent General Hooker with forces to help break the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. General Grant and General George Thomas joined to help establish a new supply line. Hooker took Lookout Valley as Thomas prepared to break out of Chattanooga. Hooker then took Lookout Mountain and continued to pursue retreating Confederates. He remained headquartered in Lookout Valley until the Atlanta Campaign in May 1864. The last example of this image we can find being offered was in Cowan's June 2011 Civil War auction, lot #32, realizing $823.00. That example had a large section of the mount and part of the image missing. This is a far superior example.
