A Great Richmond, Virginia content letter, 4pp. 4to., with a finely illustrated wood-cut engraved view of the Capitol of Virginia from the south bank of the James River, written by a certain E. A. Rhodes, addressed to renowned and well-published, Harvard mathematics Professor Benjamin Pierce (1809-1880), reading, in part: "…above you have sketch of a portion of our good city, so that you can form a little idea of my preferred home. The view is taken from the south side of the James River opposite the city, but does not show the prettiest part of it. On the left is the Petersburg RR Bridge, in the center is the St. Paul's (Epis. Church), then comes the Capitol with the Flag flying, showing that the "Alligators" are in session-Music; Lib a Lib stir up the monkeys-whip a Locket…since I ret'd. from Yankee Land…have managed to squeeze out a few days for hunting…we killed so much game…the "Hebrew Fund Ball"…will be the all of the season. In was in Petersburg last month on a frolic & we had a right jolly time…our city gas works are nearly finished & they expect to have a grand flare up on the night of [Washington's Birthday] the 22nd. It will be great thing…you see our village is improving…I trust I shall visit Yankee Land next summer, i. e. if we don't split off from the Union & if so…go it darkies. I sold a negro woman last week & a flock of them last October…a darkey preacher said in his sermon 'The sheep will be on the right hand & the goats on the left & bless be Lord bredren. We know who wears the wool.' Pretty good [?]…E. A. Rhodes." Expected folds, else VG
