c. 1770 Colonial-era, Hand-carved Unique Heart-shaped, German Hessian or Pennsylvania Dutch Snuff or Pill Box made of beautifully Scrimshaw Engraved Bone, Fine. Measuring 2” x 1.75” x 1” high, this highly unusual small beautifully engraved box features ornate carving in a unique, heart-shaped design. This box was made of two pieces of bone, each half being meticulously Hand-carved separately then joined to the other with pins. The lid is also heart-shaped and attached with a small hinge. This is clearly of German origin, as evidenced by the hand-carved inscription “Schon Gruss” (Greetings) on the lid and the Germanic Eagle on the opposite side. We can see this being carried by a Hessian soldier during the Revolutionary War or being lovingly created and Hand-engraved by a member of the Pennsylvania Dutch community (German descendants) as a gift of love. Wonderful in its quality and “Folk Art” design as a Keepsake or museum quality, still being in perfect working condition.
