A complete issue of the Niles Weekly Register, Baltimore, October 2, 1824, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, running 1-2/3 pages, “The Huntingdon Case,” provides an in-depth look at Slave Stealing. In part, “The defendant .. was indicted for forcibly seizing a Negro man who called himself Hezekiah Cooper, and taking him from Pennsylvania to Hagerstown Maryland .. From evidence it appeared that a black man who called himself Hezekiah Cooper was taken from the field of Mr. Stewart in the fall of 1823. ..One of the witnesses in behalf of the prosecution was a Negro man who had also been taken up as a runaway, and who broke the Huntingdon jail some time ago, testified that he had seen the Negro which the defendant was accused of taking away, in the Huntingdon jail. .. The counsel for the defendant, ..did not attempt to deny the taking up of the Negro in Pennsylvania ... but they proved by one witness that this Negro man .. belonged to Mr. Williams who lived in Maryland. ..” the fascinating fugitive slave / slave stealing continues in great detail.
