A desperate Southern soldier wife's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Margaret Guthrie, Benton, Lowndes Co., [Ala.], January 1864, "To His Excellency. Thos. H. Watts," reading, in full: "Sir, My husband has been in the army for two years & I am wholly unable to clothe myself without cards…I am not able to bye them. Will you please send me an order on J. M. Heep of Selma for a pair…I will pay the eight dollars to him. This is the first I have asked as a soldier's wife…I am compelled to do so as myself & children are without clothing. I have done so far without help, but now I am compelled to ask it. I deposited money in Benton for salt in November but have received none yet as there has but one lot come. I don't know what I will do for it as I am unable to bye it, only as a soldier's wife…Margaret Guthrie." Near fine.
