c. 1780 Colonial to Revolutionary War Period, Decorative Hand-Carved Pennsylvania German/Dutch Wood “Mangle Board” (length of wood which was used to roll and flatten cloth) with “Horse” Carving Handle and Extensive Designs, Fine. This Wood Mangle Board measures about 15” long, including the 6.5” long top handle (carved in the shape of a horse), and 3.25” wide. This highly ornate, extensively Hand-Carved example appears to be of Pennsylvania Dutch design. Mangle boards were early home use devices that were used to wring water from washed cloth and to smooth it. It was used by wrapping the cloth around a wood cylinder and the mangle board was used to squeeze the water out of the cloth and flatten it. The extensive amount of time to Hand-carve the intricate beautiful details to decorate this museum quality example make it both remarkable in its quality and design. An outstanding Colonial period example of a practical home use device. In nice condition, with some expected wear from use. We sold a slightly longer example with a shorter handle, for $1,800 in our January 23, 2021 sale, which did not have a wonderful Carved “Horse” Handle as on this current example.
