Gregory's Express Pocket Letter Book, Designed to Facilitate Correspondence between Cities and Towns, and the Mining Districts in California, and All Parts of the United States. San Francisco: Thompson & Hitchcock, 1851. 20 blank leaves, 3” x 5”. Original dark purple wrappers printed in gilt. Very fine. An interesting Gold Rush item intended to advertise Gregory's United States & California Express, an express mail service that delivered letters and parcels by steamboat by way of the Panama Isthmus. From the rear wrapper: "The Central Office of this Express in located in the thoroughly fire-proof building, 280 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, from which the proprietor Daily dispatches Expresses by steamboat, to all parts of the Mines, and to Portland, Oregon, and Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, on the arrival of each steamer with packages from the States ... Gold Dust by this Line insured, and forwarded to all parts of the United States and Europe...." Scarce.
