Unusual Manuscript Document being a lengthy list of forty-nine (49) men with name, rank and date of commission, as well as "Original entry into service" date, 3pp. folio, it is entitled "All offices on this list are Graduate of the Military Academy [West Point] except those to whose name this mark (x) is offered." Listed are David Jones, AC Myers, SP More, Thomas Rhett, James Longstreet, Benjamin Huger,W.D. DeSaussure, Stephen D. Lee,T.K. Jackson, Barnard Bee, and more. Notated on interior of page 3 "Sent into the Senate 28 Jany 1861" followed by lists of R.H. Anderson, Barnard Bee, Thomas Rhett, William DeSaussure, and N. Evans. Seven of the officers have an abbreviated "appoint'd" inked next to their name in the rank column that suggests a time continuum and probably indicates and informal record of their subsequent acceptance of South Carolina commissions after resigning from the Old Army. This document was probably drafted shortly after Lincoln's election to the presidency in November 1860 under the auspices of the State Adjutant General who, in turn, had been authorized by Governor Pickens through the state legislature of December 17th to call out the militia and enlist volunteers necessary for an army of nineteen regiments plus batteries. Very rare. Fine condition. In the Baptist church of Columbia, South Carolina, the South Carolina convention voted 159 - 0 for secession. Another resolution establishes a committee to draft the ordinance of secession and then adjourns to Charleston, Institute Hall, because of smallpox in the city. From Charleston, it will issue its ordinance of secession on December 20, which dissolves the state from the United States of America.
