McDOWELL, Irvin (1818-1885) Union major general who commanded the Union army in its first large-scale encounter with the Confederate army and was soundly defeated. Playing a minor role throughout the remainder of the war. McDowell finally end up in command of the Department of California in July 1864. Partly-printed D.S. “Irvin McDowell” 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 9, 1849 transmitting to Henry S. Hewitt his assistant surgeon’s commission. Light toning, else very good.
