Vaughn Richard Shoemaker (1902-1991), Carol Stream, Illinois, was an American editorial cartoonist. He won the 1938 and 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and created the character John Q. Public.Political Cartoon, 13-1/4" x 16-1/4", signed by the artist, "Shoemaker" and published 1971, Chicago Today. Titled "Why Not, Fellas? We'll All Benefit". On one side of the canal Uncle Sam stands with Israel. On the opposite bank is USSR and Egypt. On June 6, 1967 the Suez Canal was closed by Egypt, shortly after the start of the Six-Day War on June 5. Israel bombed most of Egypt's airfields and then entered and occupied the Sinai Peninsula, all the way to the Suez Canal. At the UN. A plan was proposed by US Secretary of State William P. Rogers in a speech before the UN General Assembly on 4 October 1971. Rogers proposed an interim agreement to be signed between Egypt and Israel allowing the Suez Canal to be reopened, redeploying Israeli forces east of the Canal and promoting an overall settlement.
