TENCH COXE (1755-1824) elected to the Continental Congress 1788 and becoming a Federalist, he was made Ass’t Secretary of Treasury 1789 and Commissioner of the Revenue 1792; leading a stormy career he became a Republican in 1800. Appointed by Jefferson as “Purveyor of Public Supplies” his name is to be found often associated with purchases and documents dealing with early military weapons; often called “the father of American cotton industry.” Single page boldly and neatly penned letter in clerical hand, but with original matching bold penned autograph signature of Tench Coxe as “Commissioner of the Revenue.”From Treasury Dept. April 21, 1794 to a Massachusetts “collector of customs” acknowledging receipt of the “…return of NEW VESSELS launched” in that section of Mass. Light aging. Exc. +.
