ZALMA REHINE (1757-1843). Respected Baltimore merchant and Jewish communal leader (earlier, a founder of the “Richmond Light Infantry”). It was at Rehine’s home that the first Baltimore Jewish religious services took place and from which that congregation grew. It was also to his home that Leeser first came in America in 1824. Single page (8 x 10) penned letter in his tiny, but readable, hand; quaintly phonetically spelled and misspelled from Richmond Feb. 28, 1830: “…I see the [need ?] to printing your books is much more then you wrote to me before as I know you will not publish it without some prospect of gaining something by it. I will say nothing now on the subject but leave it to your judgment to do it as you please. I would take 20 or 30 copies of it as soon as they are printed but that would be a poor chance for the rest. I wish you could do it with some assurance of gain however [even] if not at present. I am sure in some short time you may be able to do it to advantage. I saw Mr. Mordecai last week. He said he would take a copy…he has not called here for two months. We’re all well, hope you are better…I remain your affectionate Uncle, Zalma Rehine.” After his signature he adds four lines about remembering him to his friends (each named) “…and the young laydes [sic]” in Phila. Back sheet acts as cover with address and postal surcharge. Normal aging. Exc. +. One of the earliest dated letters by Rehine to his nephew.
