Single page 8 x 10 from “Baltimore Oct. 18, 1835” in his quickly recognizable penned hand in tiny writing; phonetically spelled and misspelled: “received your letter by Mr. Mordecai with the almanac for which I thank you…Miss Etting loaned me one which she had to spare. Mr. M. called my house [with Hebrew word]…I met him on the street near Mr. Etting’s but little chance to talk to him. Mr. Levy will hand you this [letter]…he says he does not know the reason why you have not called at his house for a long time…he was against you getting $1,000 yet he says he is as great a friend of yours as any in the city. Others of your congregation also find fault with you for not calling to see them. Mr. Phillips who is one of the junto says you was not [sic] at his house since the marriage of his daughter. The custom is, everywhere I have been, for the Hazan to call occasionally to see them particularly on [Hebrew]. I do not know what to say to you. Your own sense will tell you that if one friend is gained it is worth a little sacrifice of feeling. …We wish you well and generally partake what is for your good and feel hurt at anything what is against your interest or feeling.” With fine autograph signature. Exc. +. Rear sheet (blank) acts as cover with address (just that rear sheet is torn in the corners; the letter itself very fine).
