1 ½ page letter in his distinctive tiny penned hand with a number of Hebrew words interposed throughout the English: “…have been quite busy with various matters and was most afraid that I should not receive the [Hebrew word]…box arrived for Mr. Kursheedt yesterday and among other things it contained 2 for you which I sent off this noon…Mr. K. apologizes for their bad looks owing he says to their age…my friends have disappointed me much…probably a week after [Hebrew word] they may get here. The holiday passed over agreeably to everybody. Mr. Peixotto read [Hebrew word and names others of the congr. who read various passages, each named with Hebrew words]…as I always go on my own way, I fatigued myself but little. Shall send my discourse [soon] but cannot say when. I now know of no one going who will stop long enough to see you. [Naming a woman who might]…the younger son of the old lady [who he names] is here from N.Y. and quite ill who hopes of recovery. Dr. Jackson tends him…we had a funeral on [Hebrew word] of a young man of great learning who died on Monday…no Jew knew anything about his being sick. He kept a classical school and his name was B. F. Phillips. …Tell Mr. Judah that I spoke to Peixotto about old Jamaica and he thinks [it would be a good price]…perhaps $3 a gallon. I intend making inquiry whether some good may not be got here. …Kursheedt complains of not having been well lately; he, of course charges for the present parcel of citron but says that if new ones arrive before [Hebrew word] he will send some without charge…” Mentions some other local news of neutral relatives and friends and sends his respects to his aunt. With full signature. Exc. Back sheet acts as cover with address and postal surcharge. A fine example of Leeser’s writing.
