Short note on single page (8 x 10) from “Lowell, Dodge County, Wisconsin May 14, 1849” (the year Wisconsin became a state)…to Isaac Leeser: “We lately happened to take hold of ‘The Occident’ of April, 1843, edited by your Reverence. Whether the present terms are the same yet as then or not, and wishing to subscribe for it we request you to send us one copy in order to find out the terms…yours, Markwell Northshield & Co.” Back sheet acts as cover with address; the town too early to even have a postal surcharge; merely has written by the postmaster in a different hand the cost of ten cents and penned in corner “Lowell Wis 15 May” (the history of Jews and settlement of that frontier territory is quite fascinating). Aging, but exc.………………
