Boldly penned two page letter in the hand of and signed by ISAAC HART, president of Shanarai-Chasset Congr. of New Orleans, Oct. 20, 1853 to Leeser: “Rev’d Gutheim declining to continue as our Minister resigned and will leave in Jan. when his term expires. We shall feel his loss. We now require one to fulfill his place, salary $1,500 [plus] perquisites for managers. We have no cheap teacher prayer books; the fine ones are not yet sold. We have elected our Shamas Mr. Goldman for Life at salary of $1,000 plus 10% of collections. His exertions and good conduct are the reason for increased salary. …$3,000 has been received by our congr. for various charities one donation for $500 from JUDAH TOURO. His assistance places us in good condition. I hope you fasted well. Mr. DeSilva, the Shamas of the Portuguese Congr. read almost all the prayers during the Holy Days. He’s very valuable to the congregation…Mr. Gutheim had his usual duties to perform and also lecture. Some of the prayers were read by G. Kaufman, the Schochet.
