He had once been chief of the Fire Dept. there; also known to have been “Commissioner of Markets” in 1854. Writes to Leeser July 12, 1854. Single sheet 8 x 10 both sides “…much pleased with the prayer books; also received a Bible from Mr. Hart… I owe you an apology for not sending the money… [for subscription and books]… I have had some heavy payments to make…will remit shortly… generally and very punctual…congratulations on your entire success gained over the Gentleman that they term here Dr. Mayer. I, like yourself, am anxious to know by what authority and from whose hands he claims the title of Reverend Dr. It is easily found out; his followers here wish to give him position and have therefore dubbed him Dr. but it will not answer. Mr. Poser is bad enough in his ideas of reform and this man is quite his equal. Not being able to keep my religion as I properly should, it might be said I have no right to find fault, but bad as I may be in not following the precepts as laid down, I am and have always been an anti-reformist in any shape and will never give my consent to any change no matter how small. I feel that to change any one portion of our forms destroy the whole, and the more I read your excellent book, the stronger my conviction. But enough, I am not qualified to write on this grand subject…” Entirely in his hand with fine full signature. ACCOMPANIED BY a second, short note from Nathan from Charleston 26 August, 1852 to Leeser asking him to send the Occident for the last three months as he had only received the April issue. Back sheet acts as cover with postmark (mutilated); otherwise fine. With photostats from well known works on Charleston with mentions of Nathan as fire chief, commissioner and merchant, etc.
