Single sheet letter 8 x 10 (both sides); beautifully penned in hand of and signed by Wm. Armhold, from Pittsburgh Jan. 17, 1855 to Isaac Leeser: “…According to a [recent] advertisement in Occident there are two positions to be filled by April in the Hebrew Education Society of Phila. A German teacher who attended the seminary in [city in Germany] and who knows a little bit of English but does not speak it fluently asks me to find out whether he, being an excellent German teacher could get this job ? This young man has the finest testimonials and I, being with him most everyday have only the best of praise for him. I wish this capable young man would get this job and I ask you to let me know about it as soon as possible…” In German language accompanied with a modern English translation and two photostats with histories of the Jews of Pittsburgh and mentioning both congregations and Armhold’s position.
