SABATO MORAIS (1823-1897) the famous American rabbi and a founder of Conservative Judaism in the U.S. Although Italian born he had a remarkable mastery of the English language. He assumed the pulpit of congr. Mickve Israel of Phila. in 1852 after it was vacated by Isaac Leeser. In 1867 he joined forces with Leeser to establish the first Jewish college in America (Maimonides) and later a founder of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati…and much more. Single page neatly penned letter in his tiny, but easily readable hand from Phila. Feb. 17, 1856 to Robert Lyon who was associated with the Jewish Home for Foster Children of Phila. regarding a resolution “…that the proceedings of their first anniversary should be published in the Occident…I have transmitted to their secretary a copy of my address and I consider to have thereby lost any right to its deposal.
